Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Freemasonry and Welsford Lodge No.26. Can't find your answer? Reach out to us directly.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. It teaches moral lessons and self-knowledge through participation in a progression of allegorical two-part plays, which are learnt by heart and performed within each Lodge.

Who can become a Freemason?

Any man of good character, who believes in a Supreme Being, is of mature age, and comes to Freemasonry of his own free will may petition to join. We welcome men of all faiths, backgrounds, and walks of life. The only requirements are that you are a man, believe in a higher power, and are of good moral character.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. It requires its members to have a belief in a Supreme Being, but it does not specify which religion or which God. Discussions of religion and politics are not permitted in Lodge meetings.

What happens at a Lodge meeting?

Lodge meetings typically consist of two parts: the formal business of the Lodge (minutes, finances, ballots, etc.) and a ceremony — either the conferral of a degree on a new member or a practice/educational session. After the meeting, members share a meal called the "Festive Board."

How do I join Welsford Lodge No.26?

The best way to start is to reach out to us using the contact form on this website. A member will get in touch with you, answer your questions, and invite you to visit a meeting. There is no pressure — we want you to be sure that Freemasonry is right for you before you petition.

What are the degrees of Freemasonry?

In the Craft (Blue Lodge), there are three degrees: Entered Apprentice (1st), Fellow Craft (2nd), and Master Mason (3rd). Each degree involves a ceremony that teaches moral and philosophical lessons using the tools and traditions of the stonemason's craft.

Is there a cost to join?

Yes, there are initiation fees and annual dues. These vary by Lodge. The fees cover the cost of running the Lodge, charitable contributions, and the Festive Board meals. Contact us for current fee information for Welsford Lodge No.26.

What is the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia?

The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Nova Scotia is the governing body for all Masonic Lodges in Nova Scotia. Welsford Lodge No.26 operates under its jurisdiction and follows its constitutions and regulations. You can learn more at grandlodgens.org.

Do Freemasons keep secrets?

Freemasons do have certain modes of recognition (handshakes, words, signs) that are kept private, but the principles, purposes, and general workings of Freemasonry are widely available. The "secrets" are primarily ceremonial in nature and are meant to be discovered through the journey of membership.
